Message from Ambassador Nakashima
2025/1/20
I, Yoichi NAKASHIMA, have arrived to assume duties as the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Yemen since my predecessor, Ambassador Katsuyoshi HAYASHI, left his office in 2017.
During the past 30 years of my career, I visited a number of Arab states, engaged in local people and culture, and learned Arabic, being mesmerized by its world. It is my great honor to serve for Yemen, which has left historically important marks on the formation process of Arabs and their culture. I hold a high expectation to gain numerous new experiences though my duties. I will spare no efforts to contribute to resolve or to ease, even a little, the crisis which Yemeni people are facing now.
In 1989, I visited Aden where you could still feel, at various points, the aftermath of the political turmoil in 1986, the old city in Sanaa full of people holding Jambiya and Kawkaban at a mountain top in the suburb for a short period of time. Though it was a short visit, such scenery is still inscribed vividly in my heart. I would like to, first, meet and talk with various people and to understand today’s Yemen as soon as possible. In that regard, it gave me a great pleasure to meet with Ambassador Adel Ali Ahmed Alsunaini of Yemen in Tokyo. We talked about our cordial ties between the two countries, and concurred to continue our engagement and cooperation to further develop our bilateral relations, whether they are political, economic, or people-to-people exchanges.
Yemen is a great country with long history and rich diversity. It is my delight in developing our relationship through close engagement with a long-term perspective.
In Japan, Expo 2025 is held in Osaka for 6 months starting from April this year, and Yemen is also one of the participating countries. A commemorative event for the 35th anniversary of the unification of Yemen is planned on May 28 during that period, to introduce its history and culture to a number of visitors. I sincerely hope that will be a good opportunity to increase Yemen fans in Japan through its active participation.
I look forward to meeting you soon.
