Online Japanese Language Speech Contest 2026 Hosted by the Embassy of Japan in Yemen (currently based in Riyadh)

1. Introduction
     The Embassy of Japan in Yemen is delighted to announce that we will hold an online Japanese Language Speech Contest for the first time in 10 years. In these challenging times, we are committed to promoting cultural exchange and strengthening the bond between Japan and Yemen. This year, we are proud to offer an online platform for Japanese language learners in Yemen to demonstrate their passion for the Japanese language and culture, and to connect with like-minded individuals. This event aims to foster interaction through the Japanese language and to provide an opportunity for everyone to "share" their thoughts and feelings. Anyone interested in the Japanese language is welcome to participate.

2. Date
     June 18th (Thursday)

3. Eligibility
  • Yemeni nationals whose mother tongue is not Japanese.
  • This contest is open to individuals interested in the Japanese language, regardless of their current proficiency level.​

4. Contest Format
  • This contest will be held online. *Details will be communicated to applicants at a later date.
  • The contest will consist of a single speech section, welcoming participants of all levels to present their thoughts and experiences.
  • Speech Length: 1~3 minutes. (Please prepare your script to fit within 3 minutes.)
  • Speech Theme: "What I Like About Japan / Yemen"
This theme encourages participants to freely express what they like about Japan or Yemen.

―"What I Like About Japan": Please talk about what fascinates you about Japan, what sparked your interest, or why you like it – covering aspects such as Japanese culture, history, technology, anime, manga, food, specific places, Japanese people, or Japanese ways of thinking.

―"What I Like About Yemen": Please talk about what you are proud of or what you find charming about your home country, Yemen – covering its rich history, beautiful landscapes, unique traditions, delicious food, or the warmth of its people.

Please express in Japanese what makes these things special and important to you from your own perspective. We look forward to your diverse perspectives and passionate presentations.

5. Prizes
     
Digital Certificate of Appreciation / Participation Certificate are planned.

6. How to Apply
  • While we generally intend for all applicants to participate, please be aware that there may be a screening process if there is a large number of applicants.

7. Judging Criteria
Speeches will be evaluated based on the following criteria. As there are no separate levels, we will emphasize the effort and expressiveness of participants appropriate to their individual level in each judging category.
 
  • Content: Originality, relevance to the theme, clarity of ideas, and overall interest. We will evaluate your unique perspective and passionate expression.
  • Fluency: Smoothness of delivery, natural pace, and rhythm.
  • Pronunciation & Intonation: Accuracy of Japanese sounds, appropriate accent, and natural intonation.
  • Grammar & Vocabulary: Correctness of grammatical structures, appropriate use of vocabulary, and richness of expression. Please aim for accuracy using vocabulary appropriate to your level.
  • Expression: Speaker's presence, confidence, emotional expression, and ability to engage the audience.
 
8. Rules and Disclaimers
  • All speeches must be the participant's original work. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
  • The decisions of the judges are final and binding.
  • All participants are expected to show mutual respect and encouragement, fostering a supportive environment for learning and sharing.
