On March 11 (same day local time), in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr. Yoshizane Ishii, Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva, and Mr. Kim-Tobias Eling, Senior Director for Strategy and External Engagement at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), signed and exchanged notes regarding a grant aid for the "Project for the Improvement of the Living Conditions for Internally Displaced Persons and their Host Communities in Ma'rib, the grant amounts 840 million yen, which is approximately 5.3 million USD.
1. Yemen has been severely affected by the long-running conflict. Marib Governorate, with a population of 3.1 million and adjacent to Sana'a, hosts the largest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country, with 1.8 million, more than 60% of these displaced households living in emergency shelters or tents. In the governorate, more than 260,000 IDPs lack access to appropriate medical care, and more than 50,000 are forced to rely on unsafe water sources, such as puddles and dilapidated water facilities.
2. This project will improve the living environment of IDPs and host communities by renovating health and medical facilities, improving disaster infrastructure, and constructing shelters in Marib Governorate, where a large number of IDPs reside, and is expected to contribute to improving the humanitarian situation in the country.
3. Peace and stability in Yemen are important for ensuring peace and stability in the Middle East region. This project, which aims to contribute to peace and stability in Yemen through improving the humanitarian situation, is highly significant from the perspective of economic security. The Government of Japan will continue to work proactively towards realizing peace and stability in Yemen, in cooperation with the United Nations and relevant countries.
