Japan Announces 13.8 Million USD Assistance Package to Yemen for Humanitarian Aid and Peace Enhancement
1. In a strategic move to address the pressing humanitarian needs and foster peace in Yemen, the Government of Japan has committed to a new aid package totaling approximately 13.8 million USD. This funding, drawn from Japan's supplementary budget for FY2025, responds to the decade-long conflict's deteriorating impact on Yemen.
2. The assistance package targets critical humanitarian sectors, including nutrition, health, protection of internally displaced persons and refugees, disaster response to natural calamities such as floods, access to water, sexual and reproductive health, the prevention of gender-based violence, and mine action. It also includes protection and support for victims of armed conflict. These initiatives will be executed in partnership with international organizations, including WFP, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNESCO, UNFPA, ICRC, and UNDP.
3. A significant component of the package is the allocation of 1.18 million USD towards peace enhancement projects in Yemen. Within this, 960,000 USD is earmarked for facilitating the seamless flow of commercial goods into the country and implementing UNSC Resolution 2216, through the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) operated by UNOPS. Additionally, 220,000 USD will bolster the ongoing efforts of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) to mitigate conflict tensions, promote effective mediation, and advance an inclusive political solution.
4. As a friend of Yemen, Japan has consistently contributed to its infrastructure development. Efforts include enhancing efficiency at the Port of Aden, rehabilitating intra-urban roads in Aden City, ensuring children's access to quality education, and providing vocational training to the young workforce. Japan has also supported capacity building for Yemeni government employees through various training programs. This new assistance package underscores Japan's unwavering commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people amid what is widely regarded as the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis.
