The Embassy of Japan Information and Cultural Center Opens 7:30 – 15:30, Saturday to Wednesday.  The Centre has information about Japan such as magazines, books, introductory VCR tape, music CDs etc. Some are available for rent.  Please come to the Embassy or call 01-423700.

Cultural events during 2008

 

2nd Japan Cultural Week

 

3rd August to 8th August 2008

 

Embassy of Japan in Sana’a in cooperation with Ministry of Culture, Sana’a Secretariat, Japan Foundation and Yemen-Japan Friendship Association organized 2nd Japan Cultural Week from3rd to 7th August 2008.  More than 2500 people enjoyed the 2nd Japan Cultural week.

 

This year, Japan Foundation dispatched Okinawa Music Group “Yui” -Vibes from Southern Islands.  On 3rd August, the Group had a concert at Sana’a Cultural Center, to introduce Variety and attractiveness of Japanese culture through Yaeyama and Okinawa music with traditional dance.  More than 400 audiences were enchanted with the concert.

     

 

In the Sana’a Cultural House, demonstrations related to Japan took place everyday from 10:00 am to 11:30.  Demonstrations were: Judo and Karate on 4th August, Youth Ship Program on 5th, and Japanese Culture and Education on 6th respectively.  On 7th August, Japanese Speech Contest was held.  It was seen that how much the Yemeni student improved their Japanese speech.

 

From 4 pm to 6 pm everyday, Yemeni people had the experience of Japanese culture, such as Japanese lesson, calligraphy, games, traditional cloths and origami.  Yosakoi dance, Japanese songs and Kendo also were introduced.

 

In Sana’a Cultural House, a Japanese print art, called “Ukiyoe” was exhibited.  Hiroshige Utagawa is one of the greatest artists in Edo Period.  People saw prints of Japanese landscape dated back to more than 200 years ago.

   

 

We also presented masterpiece of Japanese movies every night from 6:30 pm.  Line up of movies were as follows: on 4th “Nabi’s Love”, on 5th “Adrenaline Drive”, on 6th “Universal Law” and on 7th“Abduction”

Cultural events during 2007

 

1st Japan Cultural Week

 

10th November to 14th November 2007
In cooperation with The Yemeni Ministry of Culture, The Embassy of Japan successfully organized for the first time in Yemen a “Japan Cultural Week”. at the Culture House.
Several cultural events introduced during the Cultural Week such as ; “Japanese Film Shows”, “Demonstration of Japanese Flower Arrangements “Ikebana”, “Demonstration of Japanese Cooking”, “Photo Exhibition of World Heritage in Japan”, “Sharing the experience of Japan Youth-Ship Program” and “Demonstration of Japanese Local Dancing, “Yosakoi”

There also were a variety of entertaining programs for visitors to experience bits and pieces of Japanese culture and arts, such as Japanese calligraphy, Try on Japanese Kimono, Making toys with paper (Origami), Say hello in Japanese, Have a cup of tea in the Japanese style, etc.

More than 3000 people attended and enjoyed Japanese culture during the week.

The Embassy conducted Japanese film week at the French culture center from 26th to 28th February, 2007. It was a great success and there were around 40 people average per day. Films screened during the event are follows:

Japanese traditional handicraft exhibition


16th September to 4th October 2006

Japanese traditional handicraft exhibition has been conducted at Sana’a cultural center. This exhibition introduced handicrafts such as bamboo crafts, ceramics, textile, glass crafts and so on. During the exhibition, the Embassy invited 5 elementary and Junior high schools (around 100 students) to the venue and conducted workshops to make bamboo and wood handicrafts.

 

Ikebana (Japanese traditional flower arrangement) lecture and demonstration


4th September to 6th September 2006

Two Ikebana specialists (Mr. Ishiwata and Mr. Sasayama, from Ikenobo School) came to Yemen to conduct lectures and demonstrations. Lectures and demonstrations were held at Sana’a cultural house and Sana’a University and after the lecture and demonstration by the specialist 5 Yemeni tried Ikebana on the stage.

 


Furthermore, 5th of September, there was a Ikebana lecture for spouses of Yemeni high officials and spouses of head and deputy of mission at Japanese Ambassador’s residence.
This lecture and demonstration by two Japanese specialists were first introduction of Ikebana in Yemen and most of the participants saw Ikebana for the first time. Everybody was interested in Ikebana and many of them wanted to learn it.

 

Japanese film week


22nd July to 26th July, 2006

 Japanese film week was conducted at Yemeni-Japanese Friendship Association. During this week, mainly Samurai movie was screened. Around 140 people joined the event in total and they were mainly students who study Japanese at the Association. Names of screened films as follows:

  5. NITABOH
 

 

Japanese National Football Team came to Yemen

Japanese national football team came to Yemen and had a match for qualifying for Asia Football Championship Final in 2007. Japanese team had a match with Yemeni national team on 5th September 2006 in Sana’a.  After World Cup Final in Germany, Japanese team had changed many players and came to Saudi Arabia and Yemen for the qualifying matches. 
Japanese team lost a match versus Saudi team in Jeddah. The match with Yemeni team was vital for qualifying of the Asia Football Championship Final in 2007. There were some difficult condition such as fatigue of tour, different pitch condition and high altitude (2200m) in Sana’a.  However Japanese team defeated Yemeni team in additional time goal. Final score was Japan 1, Yemen 0.

Ship for World Youth Program is an exchange project hosted by the Government of Japan. It brings together youth between the ages of 18 and 30 from around the world, including Japan. The program starts in Japan. After orientation, participants board the ship and travel through the Indian Ocean or the Pacific Ocean. In addition to orientation in Japan, the program includes seminars and cultural, sports and leisure activities at sea in order for the participants to learn about one another countries and cultures. In the past, Yemen has been invited to participate 2 times in the past (1996, 2007).
