Japan Inauguration of a Japanese funded School Bus Operation of the Deaf and Mute Care and Rehabilitation Society in Amran governorate

The Embassy of Japan and the Deaf and Mute Care and Rehabilitation Society of Amran governorate, held an inauguration ceremony on February 24, 2009 for a Japanese funded Grass-root Project, in the presence of Mr. Matahiro Yamaguchi, Counselor/Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Yemen and a number of Yemeni Officials from the concerned authorities in Amran governorate.
The Government of Japan extended a grant in 2007, to fund the project for Improving the School Bus Operation of Deaf and Mute Care and Rehabilitation Society in Amran Governorate. The fund was utilized to purchase a 26-seater bus to commute the deaf and mute students to and from the Society, which offers basic education and vocational training to around 100 students, yet considerable number of them were unable to get access to services and social activities in Amran. The grant aims at developing the Society’s activities and enable it reach to those who have hearing and listening disabilities in Amran’s remote areas.
During the Japanese fiscal year (April 2007- March 2008), Japan funded 17 grass-root projects in Yemen, totaling up to US$1,337,350. The Government of Japan extends several grants annually, to numerous NGOs in the Republic of Yemen under a Japanese scheme called “Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects”, which aims at supporting small scale community-based projects in the area of basic human needs, such as primary health care, basic education, rural water supply, and environment, in the developing countries
Following the inauguration ceremony, the Embassy of Japan performed an activity under the name of “School Caravan” during which a visual presentation about Japan was demonstrated by the Embassy’s cultural officer, to the students with hearing and speaking disabilities of the Society. This visual presentation was made in a special form, to commensurate with abilities of the students with hearing and speaking disabilities. The Embassy of Japan conducts school caravan activities almost every two months in the different Yemeni schools to familiarize the Yemeni students with the Japanese culture and way of life.
